As the school term begins we are excited, intriged, and genuinely energetic about everything we will discover, create, connect, refresh, revisit, research, and catch up with. We thought this adorable Dr. Seuss creation was a optimistic way to begin our term. Barron was given a box with a special gift for the start of school and told for three days not to open and he had discipline and never did. He opened it today, the day he was instructed to, and was gifted a Deadpool ornament to begin this term with maximum effort and knowing that he too is a superhero and part of the Grade Five Team.
I introduced Barron to the mythological story of Pandora's Box three days ago when I gave him the giften to remind him that not everyone has discipline and strength to resist temptations or to complete tasks. You can also enjoy the tale from Geethandali Kids at: https://youtu.be/rNk-zV2T7bI?si=MxAYfh4-ns_ZLAm6
Barron and I decided to remix the story as a fun activity for the first day. Barron retold a version of Pandora's Box where Pandora opened it immediately and I told a version of a mix up of boxes with fishing tackle. Barron was also able to remember the six questions or the 5 W's and 1 H of a story which are Who, What, Where, When, How and Why as we are reminded by Jack Hartman in his two wonderdul songs: https://youtu.be/0Bz4-1YKI1M?si=s2_0IKhFxDadaHlI and https://youtu.be/6fMTIQvAU5M?si=XVnzEudFZHlNCpju
Every month that this generous and creative artist will share a freebie memory card:https://www.twelvelittletales.com/freebie.html we will do a Who, What, Where, When, Why, and How? story beginnings (not a complete story, simply how to start one - brainstorming sessions.)
Barron created a cute little book reminder:
He didn't drink them as they are for adults, yet he wanted to support the brothers and their business. In the future we will reference a gentleman named Rob from Art For Kids Hub in helping us achieve our drawing skills. We think he makes wonderful free lessons found at: https://artforkidshub.com/ and on his YouTube channel. He draws with his children so it is a lovely family friendly channel.
Barron selected his word of the year and completed a sheet which we modified. Oiginally intended as a New Year 2023 word selection from a TpT shop called Teachingwithapoint, however it is no longer available to link to. Basically the resource had a star template, a hat and a disco ball design to choose from and you share the word you selected. Barron chose the disco ball and I chose the hat because I had learnt a new fact that in Germany on the first day of school children are given a small gift in the shape of a cone (an upside down party hat) and thought that was neat. We do not have a printer yet so I will be drawing a copy of the resources we reference or sharing a screenshot. Barron chose the word Prime which is defined as a noun as:
"a state or time of great strength, vigor, or success in a person's life. "
My word is Collaboration as a noun meaning:
"the action of working with someone to produce or create something."
Twinkl offers a truly unique resource perfect for the first day of school called All About Me Hoodie which you can download with a paid membership at: https://www.twinkl.ca/resource/all-about-me-hoodie-us-ac-1657558262
Today also had us doing our first drawing time together for the term. Barron selected a nice sketch book from Amazon Shop ML Sketch Books for under $6.00Cdn and will use that to draw in every school day. He was excited to find Prime Drinks at a nice local convenient store because he treasures the Paul brothers Logan and Jake and he drew the three flavours he purchased.

Barron began his responsibility of stamping our daily attendance calendar with his new stamper and check marking our 100 Day Tracker Sheet which we made from some graphic paper at our kind 99cent store.
Each day he does spelling lesson from these free themed sheets from the kind creator Melanie at Tree Valley Academy: https://www.treevalleyacademy.com/grade-5-spelling-words/ Should you be interested in other grade levels you can download freebies at: https://www.treevalleyacademy.com/category/spelling-words/
Hope your first day was a refreshing one.
