In this one week self-paced class, we are going to explore some of the inventions of ancient Egypt. We will discuss what some of them were, why they were built, and how humans have adapted ancient inventions to the tools we use today.

Class Experience

In this one week flex class, students will explore a wide variety of the history and culture of Ancient Egypt while considering multiple perspectives. During our adventure together, your learner will explore some astounding inventions of Ancient Egypt, such as in the fields of mathematics, medicine, tools and more.

Students will enjoy learning using a variety of methods, including videos, slide presentations, drawing, brainstorming, and arts and crafts. They will be encouraged to engage in the class by asking questions and sharing their thoughts from their unique perspective in the online classroom discussion board (since this is a flex class).

To ensure a comprehensive understanding of the subject, we will also explore multiple viewpoints and interpretations of historical events. We will play a review game at the end to remind ourselves of what we learned. Please have the worksheets downloaded in advance of the class. These will help your learner to take good notes and consider different perspectives

**********  A Close Look at Real American Wild West Outlaws!

This video tells us about Wyatt Earp who was a gambler, boxing referee, and gold miner. He participated in a gunfight at the OK Corral and made a controversal boxing decision.

He was friends with Doc Holiday who was a professional gambler and gun fighter who also participated in the OK Corral which happened in 1881.

The Cowboys were a group of 300 living near Tombstone Arizonas and were cattle rustlers and robbers who stole from Mexico. They were often called the Clanton Gang. At the Ok Corral shootout 3 Cowboys were killed by Earp and Holiday. Many companies wanted the Cowboys out of town so they hired the Earp Brothers.

Two interestings things were how people could be quick with guns and how the Cowboys had power to take over towns.

No Questions from me.

Jesse James was a cowboy and robber in the late 19th century. 1866 in Liberty Missouri a teenage witness to a robbery was shot dead. Jesse and his brother Frank were Confederate soldiers who did not want the Civil war to end. They robbed banks across America with support from the South. Cole Younger robbed a steamboat. They achieved celebrity status for these robberies. They were betrayed by two fellow Younger gang members Bob and Charlie Ford for a $10,000 reward. Bob shot Jesse dead in the back of the head in 1882.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid were a famous duo as were the Wild Bunch gang. In Wyoming during the 1890's many outlaws called it home.  It had a nickname Hole in the Wall. Bill Doolin and the Doolin gang robbed other gangs. Once some of these members were arrested or escaped capture the gang and the glory of the Wild West was stopped or basically once a famous shootout that occurred between the Bolivian army and Butch Cassidy. Butch (real name Robert LeRoy Parker) escaped, went into hiding, and healed up. He died 30 years later unlike Sundance Kid (real name Harry  Longabaugh) who died at the shootout.

I thought it was interesting that the Younger gang was an unofficial militant style group who used violence. I also thought it was neat that conspiracy theories were thought about that some of these Wild West men faked their deaths and went into hiding.

I have no questions on these topics.

Billy the Kid was the most famous man from the Wild West known simply by his name. He was born Henry McCarty in 1859 in New York however he also used the name William Bonney. In 1881 he died. At 14 he was an orphan so to survive he did petty crimes like steal laundry, cattle, and horses in Kansas. He was known to kill a Blacksmith named Frank over a card game. He was put in jail and escaped, he was 17 and he did that earlier when he was 14. His mentor was John Tunstall who offered him a job as a ranch hand. He saw John killed by a rival rancher and felt the need to take revenge since he was like a dad to him. He formed a posse calked the Regulars and killed John's enemies. This was named the Lincoln County War.

Billy had a friend named Pat Garrett who was given a job as Sheriff and told to kill his friend Billy and did just that in 1881.

John Wesley Hardin was known as the Terror from Texas. He was quick, accurate, and deadly with a gun and was thought to have killed 11-44 men. He was a preacher's son and a racist who got mad at Black men from the age of 15 years old because the Slaves were freed during the Civil War and he disagreed with this. He became a gunslinger and a cowboy. He was jailed and studied to become an attorney and after his release in 1892 he became one. He died in 1895 at 42 years old in the back of the head by a gunslinger policeman named John Selman.

Belle Star The Bandit Queen was born Belle Shirley on Feb 5, 1848 in Missouri. Her father had 3 marriages and his 3rd wife was Eliza was on the Hatfield side of the feuding Hatfield and McCoy feud. Belle's dad raised wheat, corn, hogs, and horses. He sold his land and moved to Carthage, Missouri and built an Inn and Blacksmith Shop. A War broke out called Kansas Missouri Border where neighbours becane enemies. He moved his family to Texas because his son Bud died. In TexaS Belle merts Cole Younger from the James Younger gang who moved to the same area after the 1866 bank robbing. She dated Cole and joined his gang. Later she runs away with a man named Jim Reeve who was a Missouri outlaw. She then lived in California and Texas and had a son named Edward. Belle helped commit a crime of robbing the Austin-San Antonio Stage Coach hold up of 1874. She enjoyed wearing velvet, feathers, buckskin, and moccasins.

She moved to Oaklahoma Territory in 1880 and married Sam Starr who was a Cherokee Indian and a friend of the Youngers and Jameses. She lived on a ranch which became a favourite hideout for outlaws, Jesse James stayed for a bit. Belle was called the brains of the operation because authorities believed she thought and planned out the crimes yet did not commit them. She was blamed for stealing a horse and was to be hanged however she only went to jail for 9 months. It was also believed she robbed the post office disguised as a man however she was always acquitted because there was not enough evidence. In 1877 Sam was in a gunfight and was killed. She found a new man and was shot in the back and killed in 1889 however no one was sure who did it.

Some things I found interesting was Billy the Kid looked younger thsn he was and was a petite man who was able to escape from the handcuffs. I also thought it was neat that in the past they used to take photos of the dead body to prove that the person actually died yet there was not one of Billy the Kid. It is neat to think that he could have escaped to Mexico and that Pat Garrett maybe helped him instead of telling the police Billy's hideouts, how he rode, and what trails he would take. It is neat to think that Billy the Kid was offered a job by Jesse Jame's gang yet said no.

I have no questions on these neat outlaws.

School Truly Begins

Often times it is difficult to get into a habit so now we have begun our school journey.

Barron and I have decided we will enjoy one poet a day so we chose Keats and listened to a few poems read f rom Youtube. We find similarities from Bruno Mars and Keats progression of women.

Today Barron did his daily sketch. We will use this webpage as our resource: https://howtodrawforkids.com/ The resources are lovely, easy to follow, and free.

Barron practiced his keyboard piano for 10 minutes today and did his daily spelling of 12 words.
