Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day December 7 + WWI+ WWII+ Cibo the Italian Artist

Today is an important day on many calendars. On December 7 in 1941 there was an attack on the USA from Japan in Hawaii (because Japan did not want the USA to stop them from taking over other parts of Asia) and that was known as Pearl Harbor. This event began the second world war (WWII) because President Roosevelt declared war the very next day. Although we are not Americans we do feel a friendship and think its important to learn about historic events. This day is a remembrance day for many Americans (over 2000 died in land and sea attacks.) although we are a day late we still appreciate learning about this event. There are some excellent videos at: https://www.weareteachers.com/pearl-harbor-videos/

There is a free resource at: https://inallyoudo.net/free-pearl-harbor-rememberance-day-mini-activity-unit/ which we downloaded and since we do not have access to a printer Barron labelled the drawings.

Barron selected a really neat toy that had great pictures on the package that we saved. He has an amazing shopping talent. He calls it his toy chopper.

This is an opportunity to learn about the abbreviations for the two wars and the roman numerals associated with them:

WWI  (1914-1918) World War One  A great resource found: https://youtu.be/LQ6dkIW051M

This occurred with social conflicts like the industrial revolution and Imperialism which was countries wanting to conquer territories out of Europe to have their wealth and resources especially in Africa and Asia. The war started with the murder of Archduke Franz Ferdinand by the Serbian national group The Black Hand. He was the heir of the Austro-Hungarian empire. Some allies that joined later were Turkey and Bulgaria.

There were two groups, The Triple Entente which was Russia, France, and Great Britain. It is important to note that Russia quit the war due to developments in their country. Some allies joined later which was USA, Canada, and Japan.

The war was won in 1918 by the Triple Entente which was France and Great Britain and the Triple Alliance was defeated. A Treaty was signed however 50 million people lost their lives and many places were destroyed.

The other group was the Triple Alliance which was Germany, Austro-Hungarian Empire and Italy. It is important to note that Italy switched sides in 1915)

WWII  (1939-1945) World War Two  A great resource: https://youtu.be/HUqy-OQvVtI and https://youtu.be/8Ku2BYMLkH4

Hitler aroused an interest to fight because Germans were unhappy with the treaty of World War 1 and the territory (land) that they lost. Hitler began the war in September 1939 by invading Poland and he won. Hitler secretly had the support of Japan and Italy. There were two groups that were fighting, one was called the Axis Power and that was Germany, Italy, and Japan. The other group was called allies and that was Britain, Russia, and the USA.

After German attacking Poland Britain and France declared war on Germany however they took no action. 1940 Germany quickly defeated Norway, Denmark, Belgium, France, and the Netherlands. The British Army retreated and then Germany attacked them. After that in 1941 Hitler invaded Russia and Japan attacked the USA. The German people retreated due to the bad climate and harsh conditions in Russia. A bad relationship between Japan bombing America during Pearl Harbor in 1941 and USA fighting back with atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima happened during these years. In 1942 Hitler's Nazi's decided the best way to win the war was to exterminate Jewish people. Many terrible things happened to Jewish people in Hitler's concentration camps. In 1949 a battle called D-Day occurred with the allies group invading Normandy France. Germany finally surrendered in May 1945 after Hitler committed suicide. The war was done. The allies won.

Did you know parachutes were used during the first world war with pigeons: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=vDRIMrN1Cpg

We found a really generous resource with a wealth of information at: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1N_fpuMQ3d_4PI0RtVwX_rrlIunFhDZHy/view
Also a very unique resource on World War II and learning how to draw with charcoal: https://laramolettiere.com/product/world-war-ii-charcoal-drawing-art-lesson/
and this interesting unit: https://laramolettiere.com/product/world-war-ii-geography-marching-with-the-greatest-generation/

A very important film called "The Boy in the Stripped Pajamas" shares an unlikely friendship during a horrific time: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0914798/

Also Anne Frank must be included and her journey. She was born in Frankfurt Germany and her parents decided to move the family to Netherlands to flee from the war that was beginning. They were hidden with some others by a family for several years however in 1944 she and her sister Margot were captured and sent to a labour camp which was really a death camp. Everyone in her family died except the father. The staff members of the people who were hiding them kept Anne's diaries in case she returned however she didn't. Her father published her journals which told about the war and being in hiding to help make Anne's dream to be a writer come true. This is a great summary of the events of her life: https://youtu.be/7o8jSbCanv0  The place where Anne was kept hidden is now a museum: https://www.annefrank.org/en/ The bookcase was a secret passage to small room where she was able to stay, for over two years she was not able to go outside. The people who helped were Miep Gies, Jan Gies, Bep Voskuijl, Johannes Kleiman and Victor Kugler. This is a great resource on Anne Frank: https://www.unitstudieshomeschool.com/homeschool-unit-study-anne-frank which recommends this digital introductory lessons: http://edu.annefrank.org/annefrankintroductorylesson/

With Anne hiding behind the bookshelf it reminded us of a similar situation in The Sound of Music where the Austrian family was trying to escape serving for Hitler. They rolled their car down the street then had to hide in the monastery with the nuns to try to escape. We found a lovely song book to accompany this film:

On a positive note there is an Italian artist called Pier Paolo Spinazze (born in 1982) also known as Cibo who covers over any hate symbols to encourage and continue peace. A neat video on him is found: https://youtu.be/b359qUdnCy8

We discovered a few books on Anne Frank:

Although it is not the same colour and isn't a journal, but a sketchbook we were lucky to find this product from our local Micheals Shop from The Artist Loft group: https://canada.michaels.com/en/plaid-sketchbook-by-artists-loft-8.5x11/10692656.html

We found two wonderful books for kids and crafts focusing on World War One and Two:

It was interesting to discover that Albert Einstein fled the camps as he was Jewish, we found some nice books to share:
