Holocaust Rememberance Day

Today is a day of remembering so it doesn't happen again. An interesting read that we got from the library is Martin and Anne The Kindred Spirits of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Anne Frank by Nancy Churnin and illustrated by Yevgenia Nayberg

Every year around 27 January, UNESCO pays tribute to the memory of the victims of the Holocaust and reaffirms its unwavering commitment to counter antisemitism, racism, and other forms of intolerance that may lead to group-targeted violence. The date marks the anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi Concentration and Extermination Camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau by Soviet troops on 27 January 1945. It was officially proclaimed, in November 2005, International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust by the United Nations General Assembly.

The Holocaust profoundly affected countries in which Nazi crimes were perpetrated, with universal implications and consequences in many other parts of the world. Member States share a collective responsibility for addressing the residual trauma, maintaining effective remembrance policies, caring for historic sites, and promoting education, documentation and research, more than seven decades after the genocide. This responsibility entails educating about the causes, consequences and dynamics of such crimes so as to strengthen the resilience of young people against ideologies of hatred. As genocide and atrocity crimes keep occurring across several regions, and as we are witnessing a global rise of antisemitism and hate speech, this has never been so relevant.

Chinese New Year Superstitions and Taboos - 13 Don'ts

Written by Sally Guo Updated Mar. 22, 2023

Chinese New Year is the most important traditional festival in China. Chinese people become very superstitious during the festival. They believe what you do will affect your luck all year, so there are many things you should not do at the festival, otherwise, you will have bad luck in the coming year.

1. No sweeping!

Housekeepers are careful not to clean or throw out rubbish, in case all the wealth that the gods have brought for New Year will be swept away.

2. No washing of clothes.

The first day of the lunar New Year is the birthday of the water god, so don't wash clothes in the first two days or it may wash away the luck and good fortune.

3. No breaking of anything.

It is considered a bad omen if you break anything, especially plates or dishes. It means you are breaking your connection to prosperity and good luck.

But in modern society, it doesn't matter if children accidentally break dishes, as long as their parents immediately say "岁岁平安 suì suì píng ān" (may you have peace, year after year). 岁 (suì) is a homophone of 碎 (suì) in Chinese, which means "broken" or "shattered".

4. No unlucky words.

Unlucky words such as "death", "poverty", "running out" and any other words with negative meaning are not allowed to be spoken.

5. No porridge and no meat.

It is believed that only poor people eat porridge in the morning, and therefore doing so will prevent you from getting prosperous in the coming new year. Besides, it is said that the morning is the New Year Festival for all gods who arrive to greet the new year, so try not to eat meat in the morning, in order to show respect for them.

6. No medicine.

You had better not take any medicine unless you are chronically ill.

7. No crying and fighting.

Everything should be solved peacefully during New Year's time. Try not to cry and not to argue with others to ensure a smooth new year.

8. No killing.

Any killing during the festival should be avoided, as blood will bring disaster to the family.

9. No lending or borrowing.

During the festival, nothing should be lent out or borrowed from others, because anyone who does so will be lending or borrowing throughout the year.

10. No scissors or knives.

Try to avoid the use of knives and scissors during this time, as it may lead to misfortune. Cutting hair is taboo as well until the festival is over.

11. No hospital visits.

Just like medicine-taking, don't visit the hospital unless there is a serious emergency, for the reason that it will bring illness for the coming year.

12. Sending clocks as presents are big No-No

The word "Clock" sounds like the word" death" in Chinese, so it is a big taboo to give a clock as a gift.

13. A married daughter should not visit her parents on New Year's Day.

A married daughter is not allowed to visit the house of her parents, otherwise, she may bring bad luck to her parents and the family. Traditionally, a married daughter will go to visit her parents on the second day of the new year.

Ballet Terminology - First Position

Many of names of various ballet moves and positions are in French, and there are enough terms that your child’s head might be spinning in their first or even second and third ballet classes.

This happens to most young dancers. So don’t get frustrated. It will all come much easier with practice.

Read on for a quick overview of the of the basic ballet moves, and before long they will become second nature.

The Basic Ballet Positions

There are five basic positions that form the foundation of ballet.  They affect how dancers begin and end their leaps, spins, jumps, and just about everything that ballet involves.

First position is when a dancer stands with her heels touching and both feet turned away from each other-as close to horizontal as possible.

In Second position, the heels are placed about shoulder-width apart, and the heels are still facing straight out to either side.

Things vary slightly with the Third, Fourth and Fifth positions.

Third position is when one foot is placed in front of the other, with the midpoint of the arch of the back foot touching the heel of the front foot.

Fourth position is similar to Third, but the front foot is moved forward so the feet are no longer touching at the help and arch.

And finally, Fifth position is when the front foot is slid back so that the toes of the back foot touch the heel of the front foot.

It may seem a bit confusing when you first try a ballet class, but over time, and with lots of practice, it will become second nature.

Ballet Movements

Turnout: Turnout is NOT a move but rather a basic concept essential to understanding ballet. Turnout is when the legs are rotated from the hips so that both the feet and knees are turned outward.  This involves a high degree of flexibility and should be used to do nearly all ballet moves.

Developpe: Developpe is when the knees is raised up to the hips, followed by an extension of the leg so that it is help in the air. A dancer can developpe to hip-height or if they have the requisite flexibility, extend the leg to reach above their head.

Jete: Jete is when a dancer leaps forward leading with one leg and then lands on the other leg.  There are many variations of jetes, some small and quick, others big and dramatic.

Fouette: Ever been mesmerized by a dancer spinning around like a top?  What you are seeing is a fouette.  This move is when the dancer does a pirouette with one leg raised out to the side.

Plie: Another essential ballet movement, a plie is when both knees are bent as a dancer lowers their hips.   They can be done in various positions, frequently at the barre.

With your increased knowledge of the basic ballet positions and several of the ballet movements, you can begin to master the art of ballet and better appreciate the beauty of a ballet dancer as they perform.

The Saints

Martin Luther King Day

Martin Luther King Junior, born Michael King (Atlanta, 1929) was an American Baptist minister and leader in the African-American Civil Rights Movement.

Luther King focused his career as an activist in nonviolent defense of equality among all men, the fight against poverty and opposition to armed conflicts, especially the Vietnam War. He was awarded the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize, one year after his March on Washington where he delivered the famous speech I Have a Dream.

Luther King was assassinated on April 4, 1968 in Memphis by James Earl Ray, a white segregationist, causing more than a hundred riots with fatalities around the country and the declaration of the first day of national mourning for a black person.

His thoughts and teachings, seeking reconciliation and understanding among all people and communities, left behind famous quotes like this. Making a metaphorical use of a sustainable concept, Martin Luther King, Jr. explains that although the future is uncertain, there is always reason to try to make the world a better place.

Tjugondag Knut

In Sweden the 20th day after Christmas (January 13th) is St Knut’s Day. Knut Day is a traditional festival celebrated to recognize the official end of the Christmas season. If you want to greet someone today you can say: Tjugondag Knut körs julen ut (On Knut’s 20th day, Christmas is driven out) and Tjugondag Knut kastas granen ut (On Knut’s 20th day, the Christmas tree is thrown out).

In the Old Farmer’s Almanac it is said that “King Knut asked children for help to drive out Christmas.” In the old Swedish agrarian society, children would run from farm to farm to “call out Christmas,” meaning they would “call out” that Christmas had ended and ask for food and drink.

A Knut’s party or Knut’s dance (Swedish: Julgransplundring, literally: “Christmas tree plundering”) is also known as “Dancing out Christmas” (Dansa ut julen) or “Throw out the Tree” (Kasta ut granen).

A lot of the St Knut’s Day traditions were at their most popular in the years after the Second World War but they haven’t totally died out by any means. During the 20th century, the Knut’s party became mainly associated with children and candy.

In families there is often a party mainly for children when the Christmas decorations are taken down. Parties are also common in schools, churches and other places. In many towns, the illumination of the public Christmas tree is switched off, accompanied by an outdoor Knut’s dance for the community.

Party activities involve singing and dancing around the Christmas tree, “looting” the tree of ornamental candy and apples, smashing the gingerbread house into pieces .
